An old Jim Rohn tape (Anthony Robbins original mentor) used to say that you should have amassed 50% of your fortune by 30 if you plan to be affluent by middle age. I graduated 27 years ago. My classmates are middle-aged. Not many, however, are affluent despite the fact that research shows a Walmart employee can become a millionaire with the right financial decision making.
My passion is health, but also healthy practitioners. the Bible says, “ The worker is worth his wages. ” This eludes particularly to those doing God’s work and adding value to the lives of others. Another Rohn line was what you’d say in response if your kids asked you why you weren’t rich. The answer he stated was, “You blew it! You blew it on all of the trinkets. You had poor stewardship when the amounts were small.
I’ve grown more and more passionate about showing people and doctors how to add even just that $4-5,000 per month that they’d put away. Think about it – that’s $50-60,000/year and over 10 years that’s over a half a million dollars; before interest. Now, let’s look at the power of compounding interest to see why Walmart employees and certainly doctors should all be financially secure and even affluent.
Einstein was known to have said compounding interest is the 8th wonder of the world. A story often used to illustrate this fact is on a simple golf bet. If you bet 10-cent on the first hole, but you doubled the bet on each proceeding hole; it sounds like just a bunch of loose change.
Yet, what is the bet on the 18th hole?
Here’s how the bet increases on the first 9 holes (Early part of your career):
Hole 1 10 cents
Hole 2 20 cents
Hole 3 40 cents
Hole 4 80 cents
Hole 5 $1.60
Hole 6 $3.20
Hole 7 $6.40
Hole 8 $12.80
Hole 9 $25.60
At the turn (The 9th hole), the bet is $25.60.
Like you thought, chump change. Yet, let’s take a look at the back 9 or in other words; the next part of your career.
Hole 10 $51.20
Hole 11 $102.40
Hole 12 $204.80
Hole 13 $409.60
Hole 14 $819.20
Hole 15 $1,638
Hole 16 $3,276
Hole 17 $6,553

In time, the miracle of compounding interest turn tiny amounts, only 10 cents in this case, into huge large sums. Remember, that’s per hole so you need to add up all of the money over the round of 18 to get the total return on just a dime.
Initially, it grows slow. But look at holes 15-18! In just 3 holes, it grows from $1,638 to $13,107 – an additional $11,469!
Look at the return on $300 saved per month.
– Without interest, $300 saved every month would accumulate to only $108,000 over 30 years.
– At 5% interest, $300 a month becomes $245,609 over the same 30 years
– At a 8% interest, $300 a month would grow into $425,283 over that same time period.
– Imagine 15%! $300 a month turns into $1.69 million!!
