CHIROPRACTIC AND EMOTIONAL LIABILITY: |
Could adjustments change the course of history? (WITH CITATIONS)
It’s been well documented for decades that brain injury changes behaviors and the way people feel or express emotions. Brain trauma creates an “emotional liability” of mood swings, aggressive behavior, and harm to self or others. A common example used in psychology is the case of Phineas Gage. He was a railway construction foreman for the Rutland and Burlington Rail Road in Vermont when on Sept. 13, 1848, an explosion blew an iron rod through his head (Pictured here). Shockingly, he survived but while his physical health was essentially unphased, his personality had changed dramatically. His company could no longer employ him as a foreman. Phineas, a once smart business man, with balanced emotions, was now a “fitful, irreverent, and grossly profane; showing little deference for his fellow man. He was also impatient and obstinate, capricious, and vacillating, unable to settle on any of the plans he devised for future action.” His friends said he was “No longer Gage.”
Brain health, depending on the region of the brain, determines our emotional health, the actions we take on our emotions, how we will treat others, our respect for human life, the decisions, how well we can perform at school or work, what we decide to do for a living, who we will marry, how we will raise our kids, the ethical manner in which we conduct our affairs, and how we address the rules of decent society.
Published chiropractic research shows that an adjustment positively impacts the Limbic System of the brain; the area that determines emotional health. A region that if malfunctioning; will create “emotional liability.” In psychology, we pay a whole lot of attention to how the Limbic System is integrated to other areas of the brain involved in decision making. How we interpret our thoughts and emotions and what actions we choose to take as a result plays strongly into the wellbeing of our world.
Recent research shows that “A single session of chiropractic care on dysfunctional spinal segments in patients positively alters somatosensory processing at the cortical level, particularly within the prefrontal cortex.” The prefrontal cortex is like the conductor in the brain, integrating its activity and playing the major role in the decisions that we make. Studies reveal that just each adjustment causes a 20% change in brain function.
Every time, I see a tragic event where another human being has made the horrifying choice to harm another I consider, “What if we had had the chance to detect and correct the subluxations in that person and lessened the emotional liability? Could we have changed the trajectory of their lives and in effect have changed the course of history? Could we bring peace to the world through chiropractic?” (1-6)
