Achieving 2 Types of Success and “Peace of Mind”

Achieving 2 Types of Success and “Peace of mind”

A few years after graduation, I ran into a friend from chiropractic college at a CE seminar.  He said he was miserable because in the profession of chiropractic, “There is no peace of mind!”  In just a few years after, he went to jail, lost his family, and lost his license.

Keeping it simple, there are 2 types of success:

  1. External: Nice house, money, cars
  2. Internal: Satisfaction, fulfillment, “Peace of mind.”

Obviously, both types of success would be nice and are very achievable.  As doctors, we require two types of currency to create both types of success:

  1. Fair and profitable payment for services
  2. People that get truly understand the principles of legitimate health and healing, the power of our service, and a commitment to the care and the mission.

If I get paid with both kinds of currency, I love my experience as a doctor.  If I only get one or the other, there’s no long-term “Peace of mind.”

For my former school buddy, he thought he could use tricks and a variety of different techniques to make a whole lot of money.  He believed that would create success. On the contrary, your process, communication, and the patient outcomes you desire will mean everything to experiencing good success.  Just because something makes money or gets a patient to commit to care, doesn’t mean life will be good a year from now.  You have to provide care you’re passionate about, create commitments that are meaningful, and plans that are congruent with your purpose.  Only then will life and practice be satisfying for you and your team as you all go through the process of care and managing patients.

We don’t simply treat for a fee, but rather lead people towards wellness and joining our mission to create a healthier world.  Rather than tricks, there are skills to learn and master and ethical, key systems to put in place.  Then, regardless of the type of care or service you provide, you should be moving forward towards both types of success and avoid being imprisoned literally, financially, and/or emotionally.
