Answer The Million Dollar Question – How do I hire right?
I had so little training on hiring and leading employees, that when I opened my first clinic, the standing joke was: “We don’t just have a new patient or total collections statistic; we have a ‘New Employee’ statistic.” It was not unusual at the time to lose 1-2 employees per month.
Eventually, I got better. However, I ultimately needed to go back to college and get a Master’s focused in this area. For hiring, there is what is called a “Structured Interview.” Structured interviews are proven to be radically more successful than an “Unstructured Interview.”
The study and application of getting this right is too long for this email, but what companies large and small realize is that hiring and building people right is worth millions to any size company. A good team also means a healthy culture and peace in your work.
Steps to a Structured Interview/Hiring Process:
1. Super clear job description including every single job activity they will perform.
2. Job analysis: KSOAs (Knowledge, skills, and other abilities)
3. Past job experience: The past is the clearest indicator of the future
- 3-5 years in past job(s)
- Past job description is close to current
- Individual is a cultural fit within the organization and has a lifestyle conducive to the rigors of the job
4. Testing
- Job skills test
- Personality, psychology test
5. They bring to the meeting a plan they have to be successful and add value to the organization. This is critical for high ranking employees
6. Multiple, quality references that you actually call
If you don’t blow the hiring process, the next landmine to step on is an inadequate on-boarding, training, support, and review process.
However, get this right – and suddenly you’ll find your area does have great employees that can bring your business, your life, and the lives of others to the next level!
